Wayne Despain

As a preteen growing up in Salt Lake City, Wayne saw a picture of Frank Lloyd Wright’s “Falling Water” and decided to pursue a career designing buildings. High School architectural drawing class exposed him to Mies Van der Rohe’s Barcelona Pavilion which was inspiring even in the late sixties. Living in Japan as a young adult enhanced his interest in the Japanese aesthetic.

After returning home, Wayne worked in Texas and Utah while going to school. He graduated in 1982 from the University of Utah with a Masters of Architecture, having earned a Bachelor of Arts in History along the way. A license to practice architecture in Utah followed two years later. He has continued to live and work in Utah since licensure.

In 2006, Wayne moved with his family into a remodeled cottage in Holladay, Utah. He, his wife, and children invested much of the sweat equity while contracting the skilled construction labor.

As a practicing architect, Wayne has taken on an attitude that his purpose is to help clients bring their vision to a physical reality. When creating a new design, the client’s needs and sensibilities are ascertained and the design response is sympathetic. When remodeling, the goal is to make the addition look as if it were part of the original design while enhancing the attractiveness and functionality of the existing structure.
